JPEG Saver 5.35

Published

I took a long, hard look at my to-do list after releasing the last version. A lot of the things on it now are quite complicated and would justify a version 6 of JPEG Saver, but there are still some things that I can do without too much trouble...

Flipping HEIC again

I've used the pun before, but this time it is because I have added keyboard shortcuts for flipping and rotating the main inage. This works by reloading the image and overriding the flipping and rotation setting that would normally come from the EXIF orientation field.

That means it could be slow if your images are large, but you will not lose resolution when the image is repeatedly switched between portrait and landscape.

Flipping and rotating works for all static image types, not just HEIC. It doesn't work for video though - expect that in a future version.

Progress here, progress there

The video options dialog now has an option for where the progress bar goes. It usually sticks to the bottom of the screen, but you can choose to have it displayed under the video display area instead.

Everytime we touch

There is another new option, this time in the interactive options dialog. This one is called “Touch copies”, and it enables updating the file modification time of the copies that JPEG Saver makes when you press the copy shortcut key.

Normally JPEG Saver just makes an exact copy including the creation and modification times, but enabling this option makes it update the modification time after the file copy is created. The contents of the file are not changed at all though.

Fixes

There are two bugs fixed in this version. The first was discovered when a user was having trouble deleting HEIC files. That's pretty weird, and it wasn't until he sent me a couple of example files that I worked out what was going on - they were not HEIC files at all, the HEIC loader was just not closing the file after attempting and failing to read it. At least it was easy to fix when I found that out.

The second bug was in the text displayed over video files. It wasn't being updated between videos if it was hidden while the video was changing from one to the next. This was another fairly easy fix.
