Cobra Premium

This beer looks kind-of familiar, but I'm sure I've never drunk it before. The can design is quite interesting and makes it appear a bit exotic.

Details

From the website:

Cobra Premium is a beer designed for food. It is made from a complex recipe of seven ingredients and then expertly brewed in a way that gives it fewer bubbles to give it a smooth sophisticated taste. At 4.5% ABV bottled or 4.3% ABV draught it is the perfect companion for any dish.

Expectations

I've never had this before and the description doesn't give me much of a clue as to what it is like. I'm going to guess it's something like lager.

Experience

There's a fruity, hoppy smell to it. It's not really citrus though, more like a generic sweet fruit that I can't identify. There is quite a thick head when I pour it, but that shrinks back quite quickly.

The beer is quite a bright yellow colour, not as pale as I was expecting. It's fizzy too, with a lot of bubbles rising through the liquid to join the head.

The taste is quite mild, slightly bitter and astringent. I can see how this could be designed for food, it's taste isn't likely to overpower anything and it is quite easy to drink.

After drinking most of the beer I could detect a bit of citrus taste in my mouth, but it was very subtle. From the initial smell I had been expecting a lot more of it.

I was a bit concerned that this beer would be really bland based on the blurb, but the taste is actually quite decent. It just doesn't hang around for long.

But is it lager? I Googled, and the answer is yes. If I had scrutinised the can a bit more closely I would have found the word "lager" there too, but I quite like going into these reviews not knowing what to expect.

Verdict

4/5 : Surprisingly pleasant beer, less surprisingly a lager.
