Guinness Original Extra Stout

I bought this having tried another stout recently that I really enjoyed, so I wanted to try more. I'm sure I haven't tried this type of Guinness before but it seems like a classic and I usually like those.

Details

From the website:

The precursor to every Guinness innovation you’ve ever enjoyed.

Every Guinness you’ve ever enjoyed can be traced back to this recipe. A direct descendant of our archival recipes, Guinness Extra Stout is based on a beer first brewed in 1821, when Arthur Guinness II set down precise instructions for brewing his Superior Porter. Sharp and crisp to the taste with the trademark Guinness flavors at its core.

Expectations

I've had Guinness before, but only the stuff with the plastic widget in the can. I can't say much about how it tasted because of my terrible memory, but I remember being a bit disappointed by it.

I'm hopeful that I will like this one more.

Experience

This beer is a really dark liquid, with a thick, creamy head. I would be very surprised if it wasn't like that though.

The smell is not very strong, a bit sweet and yeasty.

The taste is stronger than the smell, but still not overpowering. The taste does build as I drink more of it though, and it's quite bitter, and a bit malty. The aftertaste is quite pronounced too, hanging around at the back of my mouth between sips. It's quite warming, which I don't mind.

Do I like it? Once I had got over the surprise, yes. I think I was expecting it to taste like a melted bar of chocolate or something, so the reality took a while to sink in.

I think I probably like it more than the Guinness Draught that I drank before, but I might have to buy some more of that to do a proper comparison.

Verdict

4/5 : A decent beer, with a lasting taste.
