Harviestoun Haggis Hunter

The name of this beer appealed to me - I hadn't heard of the beer or brewery before, but I'm always tempted by something with a funny name.

Details

From the website:

Haggis Hunter is a hoppy, amber ale, brewed using pale and crystal malt. The biscuit base compliments its citrus and floral aromas and spicy, grassy undertones. All thanks to the tenacity of our master brewers.

Expectations

Amber ales are usually a good bet for me, and the blurb sounds like something I would enjoy. I'm hoping for a strong taste to celebrate the first warm and dry day of this year.

Experience

Amber is an accurate description - it's an orangey-brown colour. There's very little head formed on top, but plenty of bubbles rising through the liquid.

The smell isn't very strong, slightly hoppy and sweet. I guess it could be a floral aroma, but it didn't immediately bring flowers to my mind.

The taste is stronger than the smell, and it's a good one. Malty and bitter, a bit sweet. I think there are biscuits that taste something like that, but I can't name one of them right now.

Haggis Hunter reminds me of another amber ale, though of course I can't remember which one. I don't think this has quite the same lingering aftertaste as the beer I'm thinking of though, and that's fine by me. This beer went down well and left me wanting more.

Verdict

4/5 : This is a really nice beer, very tasty and very close to a 5/5.
