Old Speckled Hen

This is an old favourite. I've drunk it many times before, from cans, bottles and on draught and it's always a safe option.

Details

From the website:

MALT Pale, Crystal
HOPS Pilgrim, First Gold, Goldings
TASTING NOTES A high proportion of Crystal malt in Old Speckled Hen provides the key toffee/caramel flavour. The yeast used to ferment the beer provides the other key character - estery or banana/pear drop. This estery note provides the fruity and refreshing balance. The hops used add a palate cleansing herbal note and very slight orange citrus. A very malty, full bodied and warming ale.

Expectations

I've been drinking this one for a long time, I know I like it, and I'm looking forward to a tasty beer.

Experience

It's a quite reddish colour with a foamy head, a few bubbles clinging to the side of the glass.

The smell is quite sweet, and it tastes like beer - slightly bitter, no fruity anything, just a decent beer.

Verdict

4/5 : Very enjoyable, a pleasant beer that I am happy to drink again and again.
