Staropramen Premium

A beer I have seen before and I had a vague feeling that I had drunk before, but now I think that was probably Hoegaarden. Not that it matters, because I have no idea what either of them are like.

Details

From the website:

The pleasantly smooth taste and well-rounded flavour of Staropramen rewards your palate with a soft malty flavour, before finishing off with gentle bitterness. Coming from a city of lovable sins that knows everything there is to know about great beer and enjoying life, Staropramen has many stories to tell you – stories about life well spent. Staropramen – taste the pleasure from Prague.

Expectations

It's another lager, and I think this one has a decent reputation. I'm fairly sure I have never tried it before though, and I am quite looking forward to it.

Experience

A sniff of the opened can gives me a proper yeasty beer smell, which instantly perks me up. I was half expecting something hoppy.

In appearance it's a dark yellow colour, quite bubbly and with about 5mm of head on it. I don't get any hints of citrus, toffee or any sweet smell from it, just yeast.

The taste is stronger than I expected, more like an ale than the lagers I have been sampling recently. It does have a slight malty taste and some bitterness, and I have to agree with the "well-rounded" part of the blurb above.

The taste hangs around in my mouth for a while after swallowing, so I don't feel the need to reach for another sip straight away. This is the kind of beer I want to drink slowly and enjoy, which is not something I would expect to be saying about a lager.

Verdict

4/5 : I like this, it tastes like proper beer to me.
