Thornbridge Lukas

This one has a nice design on the can and it's a Helles lager, which is a new one to me. I've never had it before and I'm quite interested in trying it.

Details

From the website:

Our brewers are huge fans of German beer, appreciating the consistent quality of the different styles produced and are always keen to make these here in Bakewell. Our Helles lager, Lukas, is brewed with Bavarian ingredients and undergoes a long lagering period to make sure it’s in perfect condition when packaged. In keg it is the go-to lager option for our own pubs and many others, in can and bottle it fills the fridges of numerous homes around the country. It’s light, crisp and has just a little malt sweetness which is characteristic of this traditional style.

Helles is a traditional, elegant Bavarian style of beer originating in Munich. Lukas is straw blonde, full-bodied yet sparklingly light.

Expectations

It's lager, so I'm expecting lager. The blurb above doesn't say it, but on the can it says this beer is gluten free. That's not something I'm bothered by, though it does make me wonder how much gluten is normally found in beer.

Experience

The beer is very pale, with a decent foamy head on it and lots of tiny bubbles rising up through the liquid to join it. The smell is interesting, slightly citrus and reminds me of pineapple a bit too.

It has a stronger taste than I expected, quite bitter and it instantly dries my mouth out after swallowing. There is a hint of a fruity tang in it, not much though.

As for the gluten free part, it doesn't taste like anything is missing. I'm certainly not wishing it had more gluten in it anyway.

Verdict

4/5 : I like it. It has a strong taste for a lager, and not a bad one either.
