Vocation Hebden Lager

This is a beer that I bought because I hadn't heard of it before, though after its name cropped up today I decided to crack open a can and try it out.

Details

From the website:

We’ve been making beer from our hilltop in Hebden Bridge since we started, so it seemed only right to honour the town we call home. Our Hebden Lager is clean, crisp and refreshing – just like the Yorkshire air we brew in.

Expectations

It's a lager, but the description sounds interesting. I'm hoping for something refreshing but don't have any real idea of what to expect.

Experience

My first whiff from the can is a mild yeasty smell. The beer is a really pale yellow, with lots of small bubbles and with a thick head on top that hangs around. It's slightly cloudy too, but if I hadn't been peering through it with my monitor behind I wouldn't have noticed.

My first taste was just foam. Slightly bitter foam. Once I got into the beer itself I found some more bitterness, then a vague hint of mango. Maybe I've been reading too many of these beer descriptions, but there is certainly a sweet element to it and mango is my best interpretation of that.

Overall the beer went down smoothly and I quite enjoyed it, but it didn't leave me desperate for another. I would happily drink it again though.

Verdict

3/5 : A bit more interesting than standard lager.
